Welcome to 2018. I hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year. We are now in the very last part of our school year and counting down the days until our children move up to grade 2.

In English now we are looking at some more difficult words. We also start to look at grammar that will help the children with their work in grade 2. I try to make sure the move upstairs in as easy as possible. The words this week have a big J sound and will include bridge, page and edge. We will also look at how we use the words will and will not and how we shorten these words.

Science will still be looking up into the sky. This time we will look at shadows. How are they made and why are they different sizes throughout the day. We will then look at why the moon looks different at different times of the month.

We have a full week at school so spelling test will be on Friday. Friday will also include a great children’s day market. Our Thai teachers will all be putting up booths to sell a whole variety of things. We will sell the coupons to the children during the week.

We are doing a great job learning our song for the Christmas show. If you want to help at home we are singing the Augustus Gloop song. We are singing a little slower than the youtube clip. To slow it down you can go to the “settings” tab at the bottom of the video then choose “speed” and change it to 0.75.

This will be our last week of learning new stuff this year. After this we will be into our review week before the mid term tests.

In English we will talk about describing feelings like happy, sad, scared and proud. We will also continue with the silent e. this time we will look at words with a big I. words will include like, bite and bike.

In science we will be looking up. We will talk about what we can see in the sky. Some things we see during the day and some things at night. Some things are man made and some are natural.

Spelling test on Friday again.

We all loved the zoo and learned lots of new things. This week we will have our class photo taken on Tuesday for a special calendar.

In English this week we will continue looking at the long A sound. Then we move on to a special letter that we will look at for the next few weeks. We will start to use the magic e that makes no sound at the end of so many words like tape and came.

In science we continue with the weather. This time we will look at seasons in Thailand and England. We will discuss when the different seasons are and what plants and animals are doing at the different times.

We have a full week so the spelling test will be on Friday.

Friday was a wonderful day. We all went to the kindergarden market and had a great time. I hope you all had a safe and fun Loy Krathong.

This week we have our school trip on Thursday to the zoo.

In English we are continuing with the long vowel sounds. We looked at the long E sound. We will finish with that before moving on to the long A sound. We have also started to look at adjectives. These can be a lot of fun and a chance to draw some things from our imagination. We will also try to use the word ‘because’.

In science we are going to look at some very scary weather and what it can do. Then we will look at different ways that we can measure the weather.

We are at school on Friday so we will have the spelling test as usual.

After a short week last week I am sure that we are all ready for a full week of work.

In science we will look a little closer at three important words. Those words are  REDUCE,  REUSE  and  RECYCLE. We all learned a song last week and I hope we can all remember it. If time allows I will try to look at some weather as well but we have lots of time so I will allow the children to move through the work at the pace that suits them best.

In English we managed to do our full weeks work so we can now move on. We are looking at the long o sound. We can make this sound with oa or ow. We will use words like coat, soap, blow and yellow.

This is a full week so we will be having the spelling test on Friday.

As you know, next week is a very important week for all of us. We will be thinking about the lives of two of our great kings.

We will not be at school on Monday and Thursday. This means that we will not be looking at any phonics and there will be no spelling test on Friday.

We will be able to catch up with our English work because we have extra time on Friday. This week we will be looking at the le at the end of words. Last week I asked the children if they knew any of these words and they gave the best answers ever. I was very pleased.

In science we will be looking at a special subject. We will talk about recycling and why it is so important and how we can all do it.

Here we go again.  I hope you all had a wonderful break. I am sure the children will be happy to see their friends again and get back to learning new stuff.

This week in English we will look at the er sound. It can be made with er, ur and ir so lots to try and remember. We will also be using he, she, they and we with verbs. We start to look at simple grammar in the second semester so this is an easy way to get going.

In science we start to look at the physical world. We start by looking at rivers. We will see how they are made, where they come from and the different affect they have on the land.

We will have a spelling test on Friday. The second semester has lots of special events so the spelling test is often missed out to ensure we can complete the curriculum before the end of the school year.

Time has flown by so quickly. This will be our last week of the first semester where we learn new stuff. After this we are into our review week.

Science is great this week because we get dirty. We will look at three different soils and talk about why they are good or not so good for plants to live in.

English is a bit tricky this week. We look at two difficult sounds. First we look at then w sound made by wh. Most of the words we are familiar with already like wheel and white. Then we look at the qu words. They are easy to say but difficult to spell so we will spend a bit more time on spelling. This is again a full week so spelling test will be on Friday.

Science this week is exciting and scary!  We are going to look at food chains. This means we will look at what eats what. Maybe some of the children will find themselves as penguins being chased by a shark!!!!!!

English will see us looking at the ar sound that we see in car, farm and star. In the past this seemed to be an easy sound for the children to use. I hope it is the same this year.

Science day on Friday was great. I hope the children told you all about it. It has been a busy few weeks here so this coming week will be very quiet in comparison.

In English we continue to look at ch sound for a couple of days. The main focus of the week will be days and months. They are both important but difficult to spell. We don’t just do it in one week but slowly over many lessons.

In science we look at a few more environments like prairie and arctic. We will also think about how animals get what they need and then design our own environment for animals, making sure we include all the things to keep the animal happy.

Spelling test will again be on Friday.

English this week will focus on the ch sound. Again we can use it at the start or the end of words. We will then compare it to the sh sound that we saw last week.

Having looked at both animals and plants we will now look at where they live. We will look at 4 different environments. Two are land environments and two are water environments. We will look at the different things that live there and the adaptations they have developed.

Although Monday is a holiday we will still have the spelling test on Friday.

Another special week for us at school. The end of the week will see us celebrate Mothers Day. The Thai teachers will be focusing on our Queen and the importance of Mothers Day fro some of the week and then we will have some different activities for the children on Friday. I have checked and we will still have our usual lessons on Friday morning so the spelling test will take place.

English is one of my favourite weeks because we look at the sh sound so the children have to practice being quiet.  This sound can be at the start or end of words so we have to take care with the pronunciation.

Science was great last week. I hope all the bottles got home safely and that you will all soon see small green shoots growing in the bottles. This week we will look at some unusual plants. We learnt that plants have roots, stems, leaves and flowers but this week we will look at some plants that do not have all of those parts.

This is our first full week for quite some time. I am sure we will get back into a good routine very quickly.

Science this week is great. We are going to give a seed everything it needs to grow. We will make a perfect environment for it. Then the children will be able to bring home their seeds and I hope watch them grow. Then we will look at where the seeds come from. Great, because that means we get to look at lots of different fruits.

In English we will look at the or sound. There are lots of words that use it like more, fort and storm. Towards the end of the week we will take our first look at adjectives. These are used to describe things that we can see. There are many adjectives that the children already know because they include colours, shapes and sizes.

We are back to a full week so the spelling test is back on Friday.

This is our last week of learning new stuff before we do our mid-term tests. We have done so much and we will now be able to show you how well we have done.

English will be mainly concerned with the short u sound. This is the one sound that is most affected by a person accent. I come from the center of England but I have not lived there for over twenty years. I will try to show the students that people sound a little bit different if they come from different places. We will also look at question words again because they are so important.

In science we will look at the final two animal groups. They are my favourites but perhaps not the children’s. They are insects and fish.

We are already at week eight. This early part of the year goes by very quickly with a lot of hard work. It is always a time when we find small problems and get them all sorted out. Thank you to all the parents for working with us for the benefit of the children.

Science at the moment is the children’s favourite part of the year. We are still looking at lots of different animals. This coming week we are going to start to put them into different groups. We will start by looking at mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles. Each group has different characteristics and we will look at why each are special.

It is quite a difficult week in English because we are going to use the th sound. We start by saying this, that, these, those. It is tricky for all Asian students so we will take lots of time with pronunciation.

Science will start to get much more fun from now on. We start the week by reviewing the unit we have been working on. Then we start to talk about living and non-living things. This will get us ready to look at plants and animals over the next few weeks.

We are still doing a great job. This week in English we have lots of new stuff. Our main focus will be the short o sound that we see in words like dog, hot and pop. However, the most fun will be had when we look at prepositions of place. These are words like in, on and under. Finally, we did a great job last week when we started to write a story and work as teams. This is very important for the little ones because they learn to help their friends even if they finish really quickly.

Science will be important. We are going to look at materials. We will talk about what things are made of and why we use different materials for different things.

We have had a few children suffering from flu. If you need to keep the children off school please do not worry that they are missing anything. We will always make sure they can catch up when they return.

Science was super last week. I hope you all got the colourful plates the children made.

This week we will look at how engineers work. This will follow on from words we have been using that show how scientists answer questions and solve problems.

I am already seeing how much the phonics worksheets are helping. The children who are looking at them at home are getting a big advantage when we start to look at the words in class. The sound we are using this week is ck that we see at the end of words like pack, sick and sock.

I am hearing many children saying that they can’t see the board well enough. Unfortunately our room is long and narrow so I can’t sit everyone at the front. If the children say anything like this to you, please take them to the optician straight away. It really will improve their time at school by a long way.

Parents Update 22nd May

We are doing a good job settling into our routine now.

We are now starting to understand that phonics are very important in grade 1. We have been using the short a sound for the first two weeks. Now it is time to look at the short i sound that we see in words like pin and big. please look at the phonics PDF on the website. We had  a small problem with the website recently because it would not load the powerpoints so I have converted them all to PDF files.

In science we will do our first experiment. The most important thing is to follow the rules to make sure we all have a fun time. We will be looking at colours and see how they change when we mix them.

Parents Update 15th May

Week one was short but great. We are still getting to know one another but I am sure this year will be a very good one for us all.

In science this week we will look at some very difficult words like explore, measure and predict. They are important in science so we go through them in a careful yet fun way. We will also try to draw our first table full of information.

We are taking our time with English because there are so many differences between kindy and grade one. We will continue to look at the short a sound in words like cap, hat and bag. However, this week we will also put them into sentences to see how well the children do with writing. Because last week was short we will have the week one spelling test on Monday and then the week two spelling test on Friday. We will very quickly get into a routine that the children are comfortable with.

If there are any questions please write in the blue homework book and we will do our best to sort them out as quickly as possible.

Grade 1 Week 1 Update

Hello I am teacher Les. I am the grade one English and science teacher. Each week I will write a short note that will be put on the website to say how our week has gone and what we hope to do in the coming week.

This week I will also tell you a little about myself. I am from England and have lived in Chiang Mai for thirteen years. For six of those years I worked for the same school. I have taught all ages from kindy one to mathyom six. For three years I was a school director. I left my last job because I really came here to teach and the difficult position of director left me less time to enjoy my teaching.

I was very careful when looking for a new school because I wanted to be happy working in a school that cares for its students. I really believe that the thinking behind ABS is aimed at making your children not only good students but also good people. I hope we can all work together to help to achieve that.

This year we will use the website a lot more. Each week I will put the parents update letter on there. Also there will be four things for the children to look at that will really help them. First there is a powerpoint presentation that shows the children the weekly spelling words. The sentences used in the powerpoint will be on a comprehension worksheet to make sure the children understand the words. Then there are two other things that look at the words we use in class every day. There is a phonics powerpoint which uses a different sound each week. Finally there is a worksheet that uses the words from the phonics powerpoint in sentences. I have carefully designed each of these things to make sure all the children are able to keep up to date with the new work that we see every week.

The spelling test and the comprehension test using the same spelling words will be done each Friday morning. Also each Friday we will send home the worksheet associated with the phonics powerpoint. Please look at the website, help the children with this worksheet and return it to school. This will help me to see who is doing a great job and who needs a little more help.

So, what do we do in our first week?

It is important for us to talk about our rules and routines. We all need to know what we should do in class and then we can get on with our work much better.

We also look at the phonetic alphabet. This is very important to help children read so the more you can help your children practice this, the better. The English alphabet has 26 letters so it is a lot to learn.

Every Monday I will give the children ten words that they have to learn before Friday. These words are important in the text book that we are using so the children will be using them a lot. In the first week we will be on holiday on Friday so the spelling test will be done on the following Monday.

My future updates will be much shorter but if you have any questions there is always someone here to help. Teacher Da is our Thai homeroom teacher and is wonderful, so please do not hesitate to ask about anything. The children will have a homework book that they take home every day. Please check this book every day and if you have any questions or if your child has any problem you can write in this book in either Thai or English and we will do our very best to help straight away.

Another update we are going to start this year is a very short monthly report. At the end of each month you will get a very short report to show how the children are progressing and it will also give me the opportunity to tell you about any areas that may be of concern.

When we all work as a team we can help all the children to reach their very fullest potential and become wonderful young people that we will be very proud of.

Thank you for your time
