This week we will be learning about adjectives.

The spelling words will be short vowels /e/ea.. We will be using picture dictionary to make sentences from the spelling words and drawing pictures to illustrate each sentence.

Traveling bear- We will be doing a theme on coral reefs and the habit that lives there. If your child has the bear please help them to write a few sentences in the book. The children will have this explained to them in class. Every Friday each student who has written in the book will do a short presentation to the class about their adventure with The Travelling Teddy Bear.

We will continue with writing skills and reading comprehensions.

Homework will be on Tuesday and Thursday.

The spelling test will be on Friday.

This week we will begin the topic of “Earth and Its Resources” Changes can occur to Earth’s surface. People need Earth resources like rock, plants and water.

 

Vocabulary Words for this Weeks Science

Volcanoes – A mountain with a large hole in the top or side that sometimes sends out rock, ash and lava.

Flood – This happens when streams, lakes or rivers overflow.

Earthquake  A sudden or violent shaking of the Earth’s ground, sometimes causing great destruction.

Drought – Is a long period of time with very little rain and the land becomes dry.

Erosion – A slow change that happens when wind and water move rocks and soil.

This week we will complete a short review of the previous term and begin working in our Volume 2 book and practicing telling time. We will begin telling time to the hour, half hour, and 5 minutes. We will also introduce using different ways to talk about time, using vocabulary such as quarter past, half past, and quarter to. Because we will not have school on Monday, there will be no homework this week.

This week we will begin Unit 15: words with short /a/. We will learn about short /a/ spelling patterns and practice with synonyms and word meanings. We will read the story “Alex Tate’s Big Day” in class and use our spelling words to fill in the blanks and proofread the story. We will have a spelling test on Friday. The traveling bear will be sent home and the presentation will be on Friday as well.

Camouflage  A way some animals hide from other animals.

Food Chain – Shows how food energy moves from one animal to another.

Pollen – A sticky yellow powder inside the flower that helps make seeds.

Seed – A special plant part that can grow into a new plant.

Seedling  A young plant.

Germinate – When a plant begins to grow or develop after a period of dormancy.

Fruit – The sweet and fleshy product of a tree or other plant that contains seeds.

Cone – The dry fruit of a conifer.

The student’s have learnt that even though the Coral Reef is beautiful and inhabits 33 percent of the world’s marine life, it’s actually under danger and is dying. The students will give a short presentation on their favorite fish from the coral reef.

This week we will begin the topic of “What Are Fossils” Fossils help us to learn about prehistoric animals and plants that have now become extinct. A fossil can be a footprint or an imprint in rock. A fossil can also be bones that have turned to rock.

Extinct – Species of plants and animals that are no longer living.

Dinosaur  An animal that lived on Earth millions of years ago.

This week we will begin the topic of “All About Animals” Animals are living things. Just like plants, animals have basic needs. They must meet their basic needs in order to survive, or stay alive.

 

Vocabulary Words for this Weeks Science

Life Cycle – How a living thing grows, lives, has young and dies.

Reproduce – Refers to how animals make offspring or have young.

Metamorphosis  The changes a young animal goes through to become an adult.

Egg – A frog begins its life cycle inside a tiny egg.

Young Tadpole – A tadpole hatches from the egg. It lives in water and takes in oxygen with gills.

Frog – The adult can live on land or in water. It breathes oxygen with lungs.

This week we will begin the topic of “All About Animals” Animals are living things. Just like plants, animals have basic needs. They must meet their basic needs in order to survive, or stay alive.

 

Vocabulary Words for this Weeks Science

Mammals – Have hair or fur and give birth to live young.

Birds – Have feathers, wings and a beak. They also lay eggs.

Reptiles  Have dry skin, scales, lay eggs and are cold blooded.

Amphibians – Live in water and on land. They have wet skin and lay eggs in water.

Fish– Live in water. They have fins, gills and scales and they lay eggs.

Insects – They have three body parts and six legs. They have a shell of some sort but no bones.

On Monday, we will have a spelling test on the words from week 2 and then we will start lesson 3. Students will have practice identifying words with short e. We will read the story “Jet Travel” from the Creative Writing textbook. Students will fill in the blanks as a class. We will review the spelling words for the week on Wednesday and have a spelling test on Friday. The traveling bear will also be sent home again on Wednesday. Could you please start collecting cardboard tubes, toilet roll tubes, cardboard boxes, plastic bottle lids, yogurt pots, drink cartons, straws, and plastic bottles… other items you think could be used are most welcome.

NO GLASS PLEASE.

Please make sure all items are clean before dropping them off at the art room or you can give them to me at morning assembly.
