This week we will be learning about proper nouns.

The spelling test words will have the r-controlled vowel sound /ar/. We will be using picture dictionary to make sentences from the spelling words and drawing pictures to illustrate each sentence.

We will be practicing writing skills and reading comprehension.

The Travelling Bear – Students will take home The Travelling Bear for a short presentation on Friday.

Project day will be on Wednesday, the students will finish their fact files on their favorite fish from the coral reef.

Homework will be on Tuesday and Thursday.

The spelling test will be on Friday.

This week we will continue the topic of “All About Animals” There are many kinds of animals and they all have basic needs to help them survive or stay alive.

 

Vocabulary Words for this Weeks Science

Mammals – Have hair or fur and give birth to live young

Birds – Have feathers, wings and a beak. They also lay eggs.

Reptiles  Have dry skin, scales, lay eggs and are cold blooded.

Amphibians – Live in water and on land. They also have wet skin.

Fish – Live in water. They have fins, gills and scales and they lay eggs.

Insects – Have three body parts and six legs. They have a shell of some kind and no bones.

This week we will begin the topic of “All About Animals” There are many kinds of animals and they all have basic needs to help them survive or stay alive.

Survive – To stay alive.

Lungs – The body parts some animals have to get oxygen from the air.

Gills  Parts of the animal that take in oxygen from the water.

Shelter – A safe place to live.

Habitat – The natural home or environment of an animal or plant.

We will be continuing Chapter 2 in Math this week, focusing on place value up to 1,000 and writing numbers in their word form. We will have homework on Tuesday

This week in Creative Writing we will be focusing on Lesson 8, more words with the short vowel /i/ sound. We will introduce 12 new spelling words and practice comprehension through rhyming and word meanings. Our story this week is called, “Spring Changes” and the class will work to read and complete the story with our weekly vocabulary. Our traveling bear will be sent home with a new student this week and on Friday we will have our bear presentation and spelling test.

This week we will continue the topic of “Technology and Our World” Engineers use a process to design new technology to meet human needs. Technology affects our everyday life and can affect the environment around us.

 

Vocabulary Words for this Weeks Science

Design Process – A set of steps that engineers follow to solve problems.

Engineers – A person who designs, builds or maintains machines, engines or public works.

Technology  Machinery and equipment developed from the application of scientific knowledge.

Safety Gear – Refers to the protective clothing like helmets, goggles or boots.

Environment – All living or nonliving things in a place.

Math
We will begin Chapter 2 this week in Math! We will be focusing on numbers up to 1,000 and using our understanding of place value of tens and hundreds and how to group 10s in order to make hundreds. We will spend the week exploring and modeling 3-digit numbers in a variety of different ways, building off of our knowledge from 2-digit numbers.

This week we will focus on Lesson 7: Words with short /i/ vowel sounds. We will be using clues, rhyming and word selection to practice comprehension of our spelling words. Our story this week is called, “Sail Away!” and the students will be using vocabulary to complete the story. Our spelling test will be on Friday. Mr. Peanut, our traveling bear will also be going home with another student on Tuesday and they will give their presentation on Friday.

This week in Math we will begin our lessons on identifying and counting numbers within 100 and within 1,000. We will practice counting by 1s, 5s, 10s and 100s. We will complete chapter 1 within our textbook this week and have short assessment on Friday to show our understanding of what we have learned.

 

This week we will be completing Unit 5: People Words in Creative Writing this week. New spelling words will be introduced and we will practice our understanding through letter scrambles and word stories. Our story this week is called “Classrooms of Long Ago” and we will be completing the story by filling in the missing words. We will have our spelling test on Friday. The traveling bear will also be going home with a new student this week and they will share on Friday.

In Math class this week we will complete our discussion of even and odd numbers and focus on place value and writing our numbers in varied forms. We will practice writing numbers in their numerical, word and expanded forms while identifying the ones and tens place.
Creative Writing: 
This week we are on Unit 3: words with short vowel /e/ sound. We will receive 12 new spelling words and practice comprehension through worth math questions, word groups and proofreading. We will also read a story called “Jet Traveler” in which students will be using vocabulary to complete the passage. On Friday we will have our spelling test and the Traveling Bear presentation.

Math:
This week in math we are starting our workbooks and beginning unit 1. We will be talking about place value and counting numbers by the ones and tens place. We will also be using our counting to find even and odd numbers and how they can be the same or different. When working with even numbers, we will be sorting and adding with equal groups.
Creative Writing:
This week in Creative Writing we will be completing Lesson 2: More Words with Short /a/. We will discuss our spelling words through word groups, rhyming and punctuation. We will also read a story called, “The Violin Lesson” to practice our reading comprehension. This week we will have our first student take home our classroom’s traveling bear and they will present on Friday. We will have our spelling test on Friday as well.
