This week we will continue to improve our writing skills by reviewing good topic sentences and detail sentences. Students should be able to write their own paragraphs on specific topics. They will also work on writing with contractions with “not”.

We will continue to read and discuss our novel “Matilda”.

Spelling and vocabulary test will be given on Friday. Some of the words will use the prefix “aud” which means “hear.”
The words are: appalled, grueling, invest, isolated, remote, audio, audience, audition, auditorium”

We will work on improving reading fluency and comprehension by completing the next story in our main course book “Catch A Wave”, as well as working on the next chapter of our class novel “Matilda”. This week we will focus on learning different verb tenses. We will start by studying simple past, simple present and simple future verb tenses. Students will practice writing the correct verb tenses for various verbs. We will continue reading the next chapter in our class novel “Matilda” and every student will be encouraged to read out loud to the class. Spelling and vocabulary words will be given on Monday and the test will be on Friday. The suffix “ion” will be the focus of the majority of the words.

This week we will practice our writing skills. Students will learn how to combine shorter sentences to make longer sentences that might sound better. They will write their own paragraphs to practice writing sentences that flow well.

We will continue reading “Matilda” as a class and students will be encouraged to participate in class discussions regarding the novel as well as answering reading comprehension questions.

Spelling/vocabulary test will be on Friday. Half of the words will focus on the ending “ion”. The words are: basking, damage, detect, vital, sleek, confusion, passion, champion, repetition, dedication

We will then learn about the difference between action verbs and linking verbs and when to use them. Students will be able to write their own sentences using both linking and action verbs.

This week will be a little different than other weeks. Students will be learning homophones. Homophones are words that sound the same, but are spelled differently and have different meanings. Their spelling test will be 20 words that are all homophones. (See below for words).

Students will work on their grammar skills by learning how to identify helping verbs and main verbs. On Thursday we will continue to strengthen our reading abilities by reading chapter 3 of our class novel, “Matilda”. Students will be graded on their class participation during the read out loud as well as answering reading comprehension questions afterwards.

his week we will be planning and conducting two different experiments. In the first experiment, we will test different substances to see if we can make an egg float. The second experiment is testing to see which substances dissolve gummy bears the quickest.
